Disk Safe ver 2.0 - Documentation
- Administrator
The person or group in charge of maintaining the smooth operation of common workstations or desktop PCs which everyone uses. The administrator is usually in charge of PC software distribution, as well as virus scanning and troubleshooting.
- Backup
To create a snapshot of the primary operating system through Administration Mode.
Compare: Save
See Also Restore.
- Broadcast
Distributing the prototype computer's software to other computers using DiskSafe's networking features. A broadcast duplicates most or all of the prototype system, including the primary operating system, DiskSafe software with all configuration settings, and optionally some or all data from the data drive. Sometimes called "pushing" or "cloning."
Please see the broadcast FAQ for more details.
Please see Section 3.6, “Network Broadcasts” for information.
- Client
The machine which receives its operating system and data during a broadcast.
Please see Section 3.6, “Network Broadcasts” for information.
- Compression
Exploiting the natural redundancy in an image file to store it in an equivalent but smaller format. Compression is a trade-off: image files are smaller, but they require more time to create during a backup (restores are also slightly slower as well). However, compressed snapshots are faster when transferring over a network.
- File Transfer Protocol
An Internet protocol similar to Hypertext Transfer Protocol, but designed specifically for transferring large files. FTP is available by using any popular web browser. DiskSafe uses FTP for transferring image files during web interface mode.
- Hypertext Transfer Protocol
An Internet protocol designed for transferring documents. HTTP is the standard protocol for web browsing. DiskSafe uses HTTP for browsing the documentation while in Web Mode.
Please see Section 3.5.2, “Using the Web Interface” for information.
- Image File
A file containing all or part of a DiskSafe snapshot. Image files end in .000, .001, .002, etc. These files never exceed two gigabytes (2GB) in size, in order to be compatible with all operating systems. The set of all relevant image files constitutes a snapshot.
See Also Snapshot.
- Load
To copy a snapshot from the Data Drive into DiskSafe's internal snapshot storage area. (Snapshots are stored on the data drive in \DiskSafe\Snapshots.) This will make the snapshot available for restoration or for a network broadcast.
Please see Section 3.5.1.2, “Loading Snapshots” for information.
See Also Save.
- Primary Operating System
The operating system which is used on a computer for day-to-day basis for all typical work. Currently, DiskSafe supports all of the standard Microsoft operating systems for personal computers.
- Pushing
See Broadcast.
- Restore
To revert the primary operating system to a known state by restoring from a snapshot. This is done by booting to Restore Mode or through Administration Mode
Compare: Load
See Also Save.
- Save
To copy a snapshot from DiskSafe's internal snapshot storage area to the Data Drive. (Snapshots are stored on the data drive in \DiskSafe\Snapshots.) This will make the snapshot visible to the primary operating system.
Please see Section 3.5.1.1, “Saving Snapshots” for information.
See Also Load.
- Server
The machine which sends its operating system and data during a broadcast.
Please see Section 3.6, “Network Broadcasts” for information.
- Snapshot
A full backup of the primary operating system at a given time; a snapshot includes all backup data necessary to restore the primary operating system.
When a backup is made, DiskSafe stores the Snapshot in an area inaccessable from the primary operating system. This is to protect the snapshot data from deletion due to Windows bugs, Windows viruses, etc. To get access to the snapshot, see Section 3.5, “Advanced Snapshot Management” and Section 3.5.2, “Using the Web Interface”.
See Also Image File.
- Used Data
The amount of space actually used by files and folders in the primary operating system; the size of the primary operating system partition minus its free space
